Melon

Melons are low in calories, with just 64 calories in a 1 cup serving of honeydew balls and fewer calories in cantaloupe, casaba or watermelon balls. At the same time, melons are high in essential vitamins and minerals. They contain almost no fat or saturated fat, making them an excellent choice for snacks or a side dish.

The rockmelon, related to honeydews, watermelons, and even cucumbers, pumpkins and squashes. It is usually round or slightly elongated with firm, netted or scaly, greyish-green, cream or buff rind. Some  have grooves or sutures running from end to end, but  all have moist, sweet, orange to peach-coloured flesh, and a distinct fragrance. THe flesh surrounds seeds in the centre.

One of the most unusual fruit in appearance, the Horn melon produces spiky points throughout its bright yellow and orange, mottled skin. The interior contains a rich, jelly-like, lime green flesh studded with white seeds reminiscent of cucumber seeds. The melon has a sweet and tart, banana-lime taste. A flavor which is enhanced when chilled. The brighter the orange skin, the sweeter the flesh of the fruit. The Horn melon is the size of a large pear and generally weighs less than one pound. Both the seeds and the flesh are edible.

The Honeydew melon is muskmelon variety falling under the Honeydew cultivator group, Cucumis melo inodorus. Winter melons are called such because they ripen slowly and are not ready to eat until late fall. The Honeydew melon AKA Balian or Wallace melon, like other winter melons, is hardy and has a long shelf-life, which contributes highly to its commercial value and success.
